Aimee's Journey @New York

The first time when I met the word “serendipity” was when I was preparing the GRE test, and the dictionary gave such a definition: good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries. After doing some research, I found it was created by Horace Walpole in 1754 in a letter he wrote to a friend to explain an unexpected discovery in a Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip. Also, the word has been selected as one of the ten hardest to translate English words by a British translation company. I thought it as an interesting word.

The second time I saw the word was when I bumped into a movie called “serendipity” two years ago. Without any doubt, I watched the movie. It is a romantic film, telling a story that two young people, Jonathan and Sara, fall in love with each other when getting the last pair of black gloves at Bloomingdale’s during the Christmas crazy shopping season. As both of them are involved in relationships, they say goodbye to each other after eating ice cream at Serendipity 3. However, coincidence one after another happens on them, making them meet each other again and again and feeling the increasing love for each other. Before the wedding, Sara decides not to attend and Jonathan found her. Finally, fate brings them together. On their anniversary, they come to Bloomingdale’s, the same spot where they first met, enjoying champagne. Happy ending!

I always thought that the ice cream store Serendipity 3 was fictional, until I saw it on 60th street! I was so exciting and found it was so popular that many people were waiting outside for a seat to have a taste, and it was in freezing winter, 11p.m.! I listed the Serendipity 3 on my must-try restaurants in my mind, and imagining the taste of the fabulous ice cream.

Yesterday, I stepped into Serendipity 3, eventually! The stained glass light, the decorated mirror, all the design was romantic and fairylandy. The scenes in the movie went to my mind and made me feel sweet. Tony and I ordered “Cannot Say No Sundae” and “Broadway Forbidden Sundae.” When the cute waiter brought them on our desk, my eyes were gleaming because they were the biggest ice cream I had ever seen, and there were so many chocolate on the top. I could not wait to pick the spoon to have a try. So sweet! So delicious! So happy!

Seattle You are so Beautiful

All the fancy I have about Seattle is coming from a movie – Sleepless in Seattle, which tells a romantic love story. Last year, a movie called Finding Mr. Right (alias Beijing Meets Seattle) was released in China, which also tells a romantic love story. Seattle becomes a rosy city to me, full of romantic possibilities. On this Easter, I was so happy to go to Seattle, the ideal city in my mind!

Day 1

It was noon when we arrived in Seattle. The first stop was Pike place market, a place that often appeared in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. We had a sea food feast! The oysters were so fresh that it had the smell of sea. The crabs was so inviting because I hadn’t eat it since I came to New York, which was almost a year. Also, the local beer was a must try, and it did not let us down.

After enjoying the dishes, we wandered around the market, seeing the exciting shows of fish sellers. I was curious about why many women held a basket of flowers on the road, and as soon as I saw a row of fresh tulips, which were red, purple, orange, yellow, combining a beautiful ocean of flowers, I understood. As the old saying goes, “Do in Rome as Rome does,” I took a basket full of tulip buds to hotel and put it besides the window. When the trip ended, the tulips blossomed under the sunshine. Accidently, we bumped into the first Starbucks! It had the ancient logo and unique coffee beans were available. Do you know there’s a secret menu in Starbucks? I ordered one called Grasshooper Frappuccino.

When the night falls, we went to Space Needle, the symbol of Seattle, where visitors can overlook the scenery of whole Seattle. Also, as two foodies, we had a hearty dinner at the Sky flyer restaurant, which was also revolving. I felt so wonderful to enjoy the charming night scene and yummy meals together.

Day 2

If you are crazy about music, you will love the EMP (Experience Music Projects), which brings you to experience music world. I was shocked by the rich Jazz history and the collection of guitars. I tried to be a drummer, a keyboard player, and a singer in individual music rooms. Besides music, there was a rest area for kids to build Lego houses in the palace of world skyscraper. We sat at the kid table and built two avant houses. I felt carefree and innocent, like I was back to my childhood.

Spring was the season to view cherry blossoms! How could we miss it? In the afternoon, we went to the University of Washington to look for cherry blossoms. It started to rain on the way. It didn’t lower our mood but adding some poetry to the city. When we arrived at the UW, the rain stopped, and the campus looked more beautiful after rain. Walking along several twisted roads, we came to a straight wide road, and the cherry blossoms showed up!

Day 3

Our destination was Olympic National Park! It was a nature exploring day! We got up very early, at 6a.m., to take the ferry, and then drive by our own. It took three hours to get there, but the extraordinary nature scene deserved it.

We drove to the snow mountains first. All the trees were covered with snow, which were like the wonderland in Frozen. I felt freezing, but the snow expelled all my sleepiness away as well. Then we went to the rain forest, where I saw various plants, trees that I could not recognize, and deer, a beast, and an elk! This was my first time to see an elk, so I approached it very carefully, and saw it drinking water from the brook and shaking its head. So cute!

Day 4

Seattle met all my expectations. But just as the two movies, the hero and heroine left Seattle and met in the Empire Building in New York, it is my time to go back to New York and dive into finals!

COOOOL Pillow Fight Day!

Yesterday was the international Pillow Fight Day! There were more than one hundred cities all over the world hosted this grand event, including London, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong. Undoubtedly, New York City didn’t miss this global celebration. On 3p.m. yesterday, the pillow fight began sharply on time on the Washington Square, attracting thousands of people to participate. I knew the event a week ago from the Wechat, a growing Chinesse chatting tool as well as social media platform, and I was so excited and could not wait to be one of the pillow fighters!

Pillows were flying and teddies were soaring. People used pillows as weapons to hit friends or strangers. Some people were very well armed, wearing a costume or a mask. I saw one guy even taking a furred shield with him. But I also realized that these people were easily becoming the target to be attacked by a group of people. The men who dressed like Pikachu (a famous Japanese cartoon character), Spiderman, pirates, Ninja, were all sieged. The bunny mask on a boy’s face was taken away by surrounding people, and he looked so innocent that people stopped to “bully” him.

Besides a strong pillow and fast feet, there was another powerful weapon – a father’s shoulder! Many kids were sitting on their fathers’ shoulder, like a prince on an elephant, throwing pillows on other people. The high position and the far vision, the definite advantages helped them to win the fight. A kid raised his hands very high and cheered loudly, and gave his father a tight hug.

This is the first time for me to be a pillow warrior. It is a fresh way to relax and amuse! And one round of pillow fight equal two hours in the gym! Fabric and feathers swung on the sky, while laughter conveyed in the air. Next year, I will be an experienced pillow warrior!

This year is the 8th year of the Pillow Fight Day, which originated from flash-mob style fights from Caracas to Cincinati. Since 2008, an increasing number of cities worldwide engage to hold this event. The date is the first Saturday of April, and the place varies from each year. While the basic rules of the fight are consistent from city to city, some cities add their own flair. For instance, once London asked participants to wear pyjamas while Vancouver required people to scream “Pillow Fight” at the designated time.

There was a Thief in our Apartment

“Oh my god! Oh my god! There is a thief!” It was 4 a.m. on last Wednesday, and my roommate Xin’s scream broke the peace of dawn and waked me up from the dream. What? A thief? Am I dreaming? When Xin ran into my room with a frightened face, I knew it was not a joke, or her dream.

Suddenly the lights in the house were on, and everyone was wearing sleepy and confused eyes walked out to their room and wondered what happened. Xin started to talk intermittently, “I saw a black shadow… standing… besides my chair, searching my bag. He… he is wearing a mask and I cannot recognize him. At first I thought that was one of you and called your name, then he found me awake and ran away.” We knew that this was not a nightmare because all of us heard someone slammed the door with a loud bang. We gazed at each other and Xin was fighting back tears. I went to her and gave her a hug, “It will be fine. Let’s check if something is missing first.” Xin nodded and muttered, “Mobile phone, here. Wallet, here. Credit cards, here. Keys, here. I think there’s nothing lost. I’m just so scared.” “How could this happen? Didn’t the last one who went home yesterday lock the door?” said Qing, another roommate. It seemed like that since there was no sign of the lock being picked. It was always a concern for me that some of my roommates often forget to lock the door. Now there came a thief, which was like an awful warning. I stated my thought, “I think we should make it a rule to lock the door every time leaving and coming back home. And can we have another good lock? The current one is easily opened and makes me feel insecure. Are we on the same page?” “Agreed!” all of my roommates said with a voice.

Then everyone came back to sleep and I stayed with Xin in her room. I opened the video “Two Broke Girls”, a popular, funny TV series talking about two poor waitresses living in New York, trying to distract her attention from the horrible night. After watching two episodes, we were still wide awake. “He is very tall and strong, reminding me of the murder in the cartoon which I watched in my childhood.” said Xin. I could see that she was still in a panic, so I suggested, “How about reporting this issue to the police?”

After coming back from the police office, and a cup of hot tea, with the sun rising, I felt much calmer. As long as there was nothing missed and nobody hurt, I felt we were damned lucky.

Bahamas you are amazing!

After rounds of midterms, spring break was coming! Finally. My friends and I went a 4-day trip to Bahamas. 😀

We lived in the Atlantis. It is a well-known hotel located in Paradise Island, featuring Aquaventure and Dolphin Cay. There are also many entertainment facilities, including casino, shopping malls, an aquarium, and one underground ancient maze. We spent a whole day on Aquaventure, experiencing the water slides and river rides. One waterslide was thrilling. It was more than five-stories high and near vertical drop. It took only about three seconds to plummet down. Just looking at the screaming people made me terrified. None of us dared to have a try. After taking the river rides around the hotel, we lay on the beach, enjoying the sunshine and icing drinks. All the mind was occupied by the pure sea, the cloudless sky and playing people. I felt so relieved. The beauty of nature was more effective than any spa.

Accidentally met Miss Bahamas in Athens Restaurant

After exploring the downtown of Nassau, we went to a restaurant to have some dinner.

“Hi ladies. Welcome to Athens! I’m Michael. Here’s our drink menu. The Bahamasmama, Bahamaspapa is must-try.” The waiter blinked.

“Is there any Bahamasboyfriend?” We bllinked back.

“Aha, yeah, sure. I am one!”

“One is not enough. Here are five ladies!”

“OK. I will call a dozen to come.”

Waiter: “Hey girls. How is the dinner?”

(We looked at each other.)

Qing: “Not good. I don’t like my meal. And the owner promised me it’s wonderful, or I don’t need to pay.”

Waiter: “Oh, He’s not here right now. Do you want to see our manager?”

(A glowing woman, wearing blazing red lips walked to us, smiling)

Manager: “What’s up darlings?”

Qing: “He promised us to take Bahamasboyfriends! But no one shows up.”

(She could not stop laughing)

Manager: “Hahahahah. You should come again after 10p.m., and they will appear! Girls, where are you from?”

We: “China!”

Manager: “Wow, I like China. I’ve been to Beijing in 2007.”

Waiter: “She was the Miss Bahamas of the year 2007.”

We: “Oh my god! You are amazing! Nice to meeting you!”

Manager: “Me too! China is wonderful. Nice people, nice food! Enjoy your holiday in Bahamas!”

(The manager left.)

Waiter: “Actually she is my wife.”

Qing: “Wow, you are the lucky guy! Are you Mr. Mahamas?”

Waiter: “Haha, I can be.”

Pink beach

All the beaches are similar. But have you seen the pink sand? There is one in Harbor Island!

How amazing the nature is! How lovely my friends are!

“We Take the Fake ID”

Last Saturday night, I was waiting at a bar for my friend because I was caught in a sudden heavy rain. The bar was so crowded that day due to the terrible weather or its fame. After 10 minutes, Qing showed up but the waiter at the door took her ID angrily and claimed that it was a fake ID. Qing and I were astonished and explained that it was actually an international driver’s license, which was issued by the Hong Kong government. However, the waiter did not listen and asked us whether to go away or find a cop to prove that the ID was true.

Qing and I were shocked and wondered how a stranger could take such an important ID, without any justified reason, and made it like it’s our fault. Our mind suddenly went black. Two Chinese guys in the bar were friendly to offer us a hand. They talked to the waiter, but then the talking became arguing, and they even picked up a fight. “Oh no. Stop, please. Let’s find another way.” said my Qing, helplessly. We tried to look for a police station but there was no one nearby. The rain became heavier and heavier, we stood under a very tiny roof, taking shelter from the rain. “How about dialing 911?” I suggested. “Yeah…maybe we can.” Said Qing. Suddenly, there was a police car stopping at the crossroad. Without a thought, Qing ran into the car and knocked the window hardly, trying to tell the police what happened. I could not speak a word but felt everything was so dramatic. Qing was standing in the heavy rain, while the police officer seemed unwillingly to roll down the window. And all the cars surrounded were not dare to move even though the green light was on. Qing walked back to me, “He said he could not leave the car because he was on duty. And you know what? I saw a criminal with handcuff in the back seat!” “Wow!” I could not help feeling excited. After a little while of chatting, we took out our phones, ready to dial 911. At that time, the boss of the bar came to us, “I did not mean to take your ID. I’ll let him explain why the ID was fake.” What’s ridiculous was that, this time, the waiter could not tell it was fake! “What the …” shouted the Qing. The boss felt embarrassed and made a sincere apology. “Well, you ruined our night.” said Qing. “Please don’t be that. I’m so sorry. Let me buy you a drink!” the boss invited us to come inside and introduced his wife to us.

We were a little drunk when we were on our way back home, and we could not help bursting into laughter because the whole thing was so funny and Qing got her ID back!

When I met a Psychic

In the late afternoon of last Tuesday, I wandered in 34th street after the class. I saw a middle-aged woman in black, waiting someone at the door of a gift shop. When she saw me, she stared at me for about five seconds. I felt strange, and quickened my pace when passing her. “Hey! Girl.” She talked to me, “Are you worrying a lot these days?”

I stopped and felt stranger, with a little surprise. First, I didn’t know her. Second, I did have something bothering me these days. How could she read my mind? “Hi, did we met somewhere?” I asked. “No, I never met you before. But I can see that your mind is in chaos and currently you cannot find a way to get rid of this status. May I help you to smooth them?” She paused, “I feel some connection with you. I’m a psychic.”

This was the first time I bumped into such a thing. I was so surprised that I could not speak a word. “For you, twenty dollars.” said she. I nodded because I was curious about what she would do next. She asked me to show her my palm first, and then took out a pebble, a very normal pebble. “Put your hands on it.” I did what she said, and she looked at the pebble very carefully. Was the pebble some kind of a crystal ball? When I was wondering, she started to talk, “You are a foreign student. You like here at first, but now you feel things change. You feel depressed because you feel someone who is very important is leaving.” At the thought of my grandma being seriously ill and I could not always be at her side due to the distance, I felt sad. “You worked hard on something but it didn’t turn out to be desirable.” The denied project, the off-track paper comes to my mind and made me frustrated.

“But it is fine. And you will be fine. Remember, peace is the source of your wisdom and strength. You have the strength to identify yourself. You have the passion to go for what you want. You will become a woman who know how to dig into herself and bring out her power.”

I don’t know why, but these a few words have sort of magic to make me relieved. It seemed that all my negative thoughts were taken away by the pebble. And the psychic gave me warm and hope. How could an office lady look woman be a psychic? Why did she choose me not someone else? Did connection really exist? Suddenly all these questions became unimportant. Life is like a maze. When I lost my way, someone showed up, giving me confidence, and I called it fate.

What a wonderful day!
